City biodiversity is emerging as a measurable health asset
A large scientific review is strengthening the case that urban biodiversity is not just decorative, but linked to better health outcomes in cities.[1][2] The practical message is simple: more space for nature can improve well-being, but it competes with housing, transport, and land-use pressure.[1][2]
Urban green space is increasingly being treated as health infrastructure rather than a luxury.[1][2] A systematic review covering 1,550 studies found that biodiversity-supporting urban features such as parks, greenways, blue spaces, private gardens, and mature trees are associated with a broad range of benefits, including physical health, mental health, activity levels, and lower exposure to heat, pollution, and noise.[1] The evidence base does not mean every greening project works the same way, but it does show why cities are paying closer attention to nature as they grow.

The new backing is strong, but it is not a blank check for any green project. Urban nature competes with development needs, and the benefits depend on design, access, maintenance, and local context.[1][2] Cities still have to decide where land is better used for housing, mobility, or biodiversity, and that tradeoff is exactly why the evidence matters: it helps planners argue for targeted green space where the health payoff is likely to be highest.[1][2]
